Hut skiing is a great way to travel in the backcountry while skiing fresh powder and sleeping in warm, comfortable huts each night.  The San Juan hut system runs from Telluride to Ridgeway to Ouray. Huts are also individually accessible and travel between huts is designed for intermediate skiers. Expert skiers are welcome to tap into the fresh powder above the travel route.

The San Juan hut system follows Dallas and Alder Creek Trails in the Mount Sneffels range, which is in the San Juan's. Ski trails also follow US Forest Service roads and hiking trails. The route is designed to accommodate intermediate and expert skiers. For those looking for more powder and more adventure, the peaks and ridges above the travel route are popular ski terrain.

All skiers are expected to be properly prepared and aware of rapidly changing mountain weather. Skiers should also have knowledge of avalanche and snow conditions and safety protocols.

There are five huts along the route, each one housing eight people a night. Huts provide padded bunks, propane stove and lamp, woodstove, firewood and kitchen utensils. Water is obtained by melting water. The hut system is an ideal way to experience the magic of the backcountry with all the comforts of warm nights inside. The skiing is also promised to be excellent given the vast amount of accessible terrain.
