San Miguel River
Flowing from high in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride, Colorado, the San Miguel River travels west-southwest for seventy-two miles until it joins the Dolores River. The San Miguel is one of the last undamned rivers in the Rocky Mountains. This free flowing river provides nearly fifty miles of great fishing opportunities.
As with much of the surrounding area of Telluride, the San Miguel River is known for its diverse waters and great opportunities for all types of fishing. The majority of the River is set in natural, undeveloped surroundings including deep, narrow, red rock canyons. Over ninety percent of the River is accessible and is public water. For the avid angler the wading can be challenging, but the fifty miles of good fishing water makes it worth it. This is also a great body of water for float fishing and many use drift boats to work their way down the river. There are brook trout in the upper river and creeks and, in the main river, some cutthroat, brown, rainbow and cut bows.
Because the San Miguel River is located high in the San Juan Mountains and is fed by melting snow, the water is extremely cold. Be sure to dress for the cold no matter what the season.
