Gunnison River
The Gunnison River wears many faces. One of which is that of a fantastic, diverse trout fishery. The River and its many tributaries have created one of the best areas in the world to fish for rainbow and brown trout. Come to Telluride, Colorado and plan to enjoy a day or more in the beautiful surroundings as you cast your line into the pristine Gunnison River.
In the 1930s and on into the 1950s, the Gunnison River near Telluride, Colorado was accepted as one of the greatest trout fisheries in the United States. However, when the Blue Mesa Reservoir was constructed, followed closely by the construction of the Morrow Point Reservoir and the Crystal Reservoir, fly-fishing in the Gunnison became less productive and thus, less attractive.
However, the River today is much like the water of yesterday. The Gunnison qualifies for Gold Medal status – the highest designation of quality trout water in the State of Colorado. Easily accessible and teeming with trout, the Gunnison has once again become a favorite of all anglers – from beginners to the experienced. There is an eighteen-mile stretch of the River above Blue Mesa Reservoir that is nearly half public and half private land, allowing for good access. From the reservoir to the confluence with the North Fork of the Gunnison, the river is nearly all public property.
