San Miguel River
The San Miguel River in Colorado travels west-southwest from its beginnings above the town of Telluride, high in the San Juan Mountains for a distance of seventy-two miles when it joins the Dolores River. Primarily a natural river, the free flowing water provides approximately fifty miles of good fishing and many chances for whitewater sport.
As with much of the surrounding area of Telluride, the San Miguel River is noted for its opportunities for outdoor recreation. The majority of the River is set in natural, undeveloped surroundings including deep, narrow, red rock canyons. Over ninety percent of the River is accessible and is considered public water. For the avid angler the wading can be challenging, but the fifty miles of good fishing water makes it worth it. There are brook trout in the upper river and creeks and, in the main river, some cutthroat, brown, rainbow and cut bows.
If white water rafting is more to your liking, then the San Miguel River is an excellent choice. The River is easily accessible as much of it travels parallel to Colorado Highway 145. This also allows first time rafters to get a good look at any possibly difficult rapids. The scenery is spectacular including shores lined with forests and red sandstone cliffs.
The San Miguel River is located at a high elevation and is fed by melting snow, so the water temperature is cold. The height of the water flow is dependent on the time of year and the previous winter's snowfall. Be sure to dress appropriately whether your intent is to fish or to raft.
