San Juan Skyway
One of the most spectacular byways of the scenic byways in Colorado is the San Juan Skyway. This 236-mile loop travels from Durango, to Silverton, Ouray and Ridgway and then loops through Placerville, Telluride, Rico and Dolores before returning to Durango via Mancos and Mesa Verde. This is truly the roadway to the sky – a road that takes you to the top of the world and back.
For recreation at a high elevation, take the San Juan Skyway. The 236-mile loop takes you to historic towns and mining locations in Colorado. You can travel to the towns of Durango, Silverton and Telluride. This is a taste of the best to be found in southwest Colorado.
Along the way, you can enjoy the scenery including sheer cliffs, rugged mountain tops, tumbling waterfalls, and valley floors. This scenic byway takes you to and through five million acres of the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests. The areas are dotted with brilliant wildflowers in the spring and summer months and in the fall, the hills are ablaze with the amber, bronze and gold of the aspen leaves. Winter covers the area with a blanket of snow.
Skiing is one of its premier winter activities. In the summer, after the spring thaw, visitors can enjoy four wheeling, bicycling, kayaking, dirt biking, and motorcycle touring with friends and/or family, or enjoy a solitary backpacking, hunting, fishing, and/or photography trip. You can explore town shops, relax in historic hot springs, stay in a Victorian lodge, or sleep under the stars in a forested campground. This is truly a playground in the sky.
