San Juan Hut System
The San Juan Hut System can be used as either a route in the winter for cross-country skiing or in the summer for mountain biking. During each season, the individual huts can be accessed or for those who would like to have multi-day adventure, skiers or mountain bike riders can travel from hut to hut.
If you plan to use the San Juan Hut System in the winter, you will have access to five backcountry ski huts that connect Telluride, Ridgway and Ouray, Colorado. You can ski to each hut separately or you can ski from hut to hut in typical European style. Surrounding each hut, you will find terrain that provides more adventure for those skiers who are classified as intermediate, advanced or want to experience deep powder snow.
In the summer, the San Juan Hut Systems have two separate two hundred plus mile mountain bike routes from Telluride Colorado to Moab, Utah or from Durango, Colorado to Moab, Utah. Each hut along each route is spaced thirty-five miles apart and is fully equipped. Roughly retracing the getaway route of gunslinger Butch Cassidy's gang after they robbed a Telluride bank in 1889, the San Juan Hut System's 206-mile Telluride-to-Moab tour transports riders from Colorado's cool alpine tundra to the slick rock deserts and red-rock canyons of Utah.
For a great backcountry adventure, check out the San Juan Hut System either winter or summer.
