The Lizard Head Wilderness is located in the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests in Colorado. This wilderness area is comprised of 41,500 acres of mountainous terrain – most of which lies above 9,000 feet. The area also has over forty miles of trails. Colorado Highway 145, south of Telluride is the only major road going near the area. Lizard Head Trailhead is located at 10,222 feet on Lizard Head Pass.

The 41,500 acres of the Lizard Head Wilderness Area is a great place for walking, hiking, mountain climbing, and wildlife viewing. Wilson Peak, El Diente and Mount Wilson are all over 14,000 feet in height and lie within the Wilderness boundaries. They comprise the central area and attract the majority of visitors.

There are a few developed campgrounds in close proximity to the eastern and southern boundaries of Lizard Head Wilderness Area including Burro Bridge, Cayton, Matterhorn, and Sunshine Campground.

Due to its high elevation, the area has short, cool summers and severe, long winters. Some snow fields last year round and if you travel to the area, be sure to go prepared for freezing weather no matter what time of year it is.
