Historic Downtown District

The area around Telluride, Colorado was naturally rich in silver, zinc, copper and gold. Thus, the town of Telluride became one of the foremost ore producing towns in the late 1800's. Telluride is rich in other western history including being the location of the first back robbed by Butch Cassidy. In 1961, Telluride became a National Historic Landmark.

Telluride, Colorado is the county seat of San Miguel County in the southwestern area of the State of Colorado. A former silver mining camp on the San Miguel River, Telluride still retains all the architecture and atmosphere of the good old days. One look at downtown and you will realize why this town has become a National Historic Landmark. You will think that you have become capable of time travel. You will feel like you have traveled more than one hundred years back in time.

The downtown area of Telluride has been completely restored and the Victorian style main street is a great place to shop, eat and/or just sit and watch the people. There is a walking tour of Historic Telluride. One of the historic attractions is the 1895 New Sheridan Hotel that still hosts overnight guests.

Nestled in the midst of a spectacular glacial canyon at the base of the San Juan Mountains, Telluride today is a home for artists, skiers, celebrities, hippies, second homeowners, retirees, and nearly every other category of mankind. This eclectic assortment of inhabitants is another reason that Telluride is so unique.
