All Aboard! Come and join the train enthusiasts, history buffs, and other visitors who want to enjoy the majestic scenery of the Colorado Wilderness between Durango and Silverton. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad winds through the canyons of the Colorado Rockies and provides the same adventure to today's passengers as enjoyed by passengers 125 years ago. Originally constructed in 1879, the railroad's purpose was to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains. Today passengers realize that it is the view that is precious. This historic train has been in continuous operation for 126 years, carrying ore and passengers behind vintage steam locomotives.
The coal fired, steam engines pull the line of cars along the tracks and the country opens up beside you. On the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad you will experience Colorado at its very best including wildlife, waterfalls, majestic peaks - all from the view point of an 1880's passenger. You will see places you can get to only by foot or by train.
Throughout the summer, excursion trains pulled by beautifully restored old steam engines wind their way through canyons and along wild rivers to the old mining town of Silverton, high in Colorado's Rockies. Once snow begins to accumulate, less frequent trips climb into the lower elevations, turning around at Cascade Canyon.
