Alta Lakes
The Telluride area of Colorado was first established as a mining area. Some of the early mining operations included Tomboy, Smuggler and the Alta Mine. Around the Alta Mine, a small town grew of approximately 250 people including a school, a general store, an assay office, a boardinghouse, and a number of small homes. Nearby were the picturesque Alta Lakes. Today the old town is well preserved and it is well worth a visit.
