Ouray County
Ouray County is found in the southwestern corner of the State of Colorado, right in the heart of the San Juan Mountains. Due to its landscape being so dominated by high mountain peaks, the area are been nicknamed the "Switzerland of the West".
Nestled in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, Ouray County's landscape is primarily mountain peaks - twelve of which are 13,000 feet or higher. The total area of the county is approximately 542 square miles and the population is approximately 3800 individuals.
The county has only two incorporated cities – the town of Ridgway and the city of Ouray
The are was originally founded based on mining and agriculture. However, as the mining industry declined and the mineral wealth ran out, the chief economic base is now tourism.
Ouray County is now known for its pristine natural beauty and the multitude of outdoor activities that can be found in the area.
