The Town of Telluride Colorado has provided a model to other communities who have been struggling to create a balanced viable winter and summer economy. Telluride was one of the first little Colorado ski towns who were able to cultivate a great, lively summer festival and event season that compliments the skiing industry of the winter. Thus, the economy of the area thrives throughout the entire year.
Telluride, Colorado enjoys a higher than national average income, however, the cost of living in the area is also higher than the national average. The median income for a household in the town is $51,938, and the median income for a family is $66,136. Males have a median income of $35,329 versus $30,096 for females. The per capita income for the town is $38,832.
Despite the thriving economy that is well sustained throughout the year, both the summer and winter seasons, 11.5% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
The Town of Telluride's sales tax rate is 4.5%; Colorado State sales tax is 2.9%; and San Miguel County sales tax is 1%. The total combined tax to be collected on retail sales and furnishing of certain services is 8.4%.
